THE TEAM BEHIND THE PEN LLYN ULTRA
Huw Williams AKA The Welsh Wine Runner, Nations Sweet Heart and any other self-given title, started running in 2013 because there was nothing good on the telly!
His first race was the Conway Half Marathon that year and he was beaten by a man dressed up as a Darlek, since then he has gone on to race in Marathon, Ultra Marathons and even the Sahara desert! Over a pint with a friend they set up the local running club in Pwllheli Llamwyr Llyn Striders and have so far seen over 100 locals successfully complete the NHS couch to 5k.
Race director of the Pen Llyn Ultra Marathons has already seen runners coming to take part from as far afield as France, Norway and Israel!
2014 saw Huw attempt his first Marathon with the Snowdonia Marathon and he has gone on to race in it since. In fact, all of his marathons he takes part in are either off-road or on a hill somewhere!
Inspired by Chris Coleman’s Speech “Don’t be afraid to have dreams” Huw signed up for the Marathon Des Sables 2017 to raise awareness and funds for the Charity Scope. Various fundraising events saw a treadmill marathon in the Scope Shop, A treadmill Marathon in a Pub and the first ever marathon on the tiny island of Ynys Enlli off the North Wales coast in the Irish sea!
Huw said “To me the Llyn Peninsula has so much to offer the endurance runner, amazing views, technical paths, challenging verts and with each segment between checkpoints different to the last it really is a must” “No having introduced the 50 and the 100 to join the 75, there really is a route for everyone….and I mean everyone…yes you…near the enter button…that right YOU!”
He also has the fastest known time for a Forrest Gump lookalike to run up and down Snowdon in a race!
Huw says “Just like medicine running doesn’t always taste nice, but it will make you better!”
Our team of helpers and marshalls work tirelessly and without them, this event would not be possible. We received many wonderful comments from competitors about the marshalls and helpers for previous editions and we would like to add to those comments with a huge diolch / thank you!
